The Truth About Internet Dating

The rules of Internet dating have changed. With the advent of social networking sites, the stigma behind it has been erased. Even so, there are still many misconceptions surrounding dating sites. I’m here to tell you the truth and set the record straight.

In all honesty, internet dating is pretty similar to dating in `real life’. You meet someone that you find attractive (physically or mentally), speak with them, and then proceed to go on a few dates. The major difference is that internet dating is a more efficient way of meeting people. It is really only the “Step One” in the dating process. Instead of going to various places in search of a potential date, a single person can log on to a dating site and be presented with thousands of other people in their area that are actively seeking dates.

Human interaction is not removed from the date, there is only a difference in the first contact. This is why you need to always be working on making yourself the best person possible. The internet is not going to magically make you a better person. If you’re really bad on dates, then you will be really bad on dates with people that you meet on the internet. It’s not rocket science, but some people join dating sites with the belief that they will magically live a life of romance. While a online dating site can certainly offer you romance, it truly is dependent upon you.

Probably the greatest truth in Internet dating is that most people lie. They will lie about their age, their job, living arrangements, and in some cases, their marital status. Some people will even lie about their looks. A recurring story on dating forums is of meeting someone that looks completely different from their online photo. You name it, and someone on an internet dating site has lied about it! I don’t say this to discourage you from online dating by any means. You should merely keep this in mind when you think that you’ve met the “Perfect” person on the internet. In internet dating, the old adage, “If it’s too good to be true, it is.” is totally accurate.

While it may be a common practice, I warn against lying to others. Honesty is the best policy if you’re trying to create a long term relationship. Just imagine how uncomfortable it will be to explain how you are a big fat liar. This is especially true in regards to your personal photo. You should use a photo that is as recent as possible, and not ‘Photoshopped ‘ to make you look better than you are. Instead of using your best photos, you should include only the one’s that display how you really appear.
Hopefully, you’ve been enlightened to a few of the realities behind online dating sites. If you remain open minded, there is a good chance that you will find your ideal match. Remember not to seek perfection in other’s, but in yourself and dating will become a piece of cake.
